Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park opens Macbeth Aug. 9
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park will open Macbeth, the next event in the organization’s inaugural summer season, at the Myriad Gardens Water Stage on Thursday, Aug. 9 at 8 p.m.
In a war torn world, a noble general finds himself tempted by ambition, strange prophecies and his wife’s desires. But what possibly can this ancient tale of murder and betrayal, corruption, war and terrorism mean to our world? What bearing has witchcraft and prophecy on government policy in our scientific age? Come and see Macbeth and find out.
The play, loosely based upon the historical account of King Macbeth of Scotland by Raphael Holinshed and the Scottish philosopher Hector Boece, is often seen as an archetypal tale of the dangers of the lust for power and betrayal of friends. While governments and centuries may change, Shakespeare knew that the quest for power was an enduring and perhaps the most dangerous of all human cravings.
The classical theatre’s summer season will run through Sept. 1 and follow a repertoire style, including productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Cyrano de Bergerac and Macbeth. Production dates for shows are as follows:
- Macbeth – Aug. 9-11, 16-18, 23-25 and Sept. 1.
- A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Aug. 30.
- Cyrano de Bergerac – Aug. 31.
Summer season tickets are $25; single summer season admission tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students, senior citizens and children 12 and under. Tickets are available at the box office on the night of performance beginning at 7 p.m. and subject to availability. Group rates are available for 10 or more.
